Technology in Education - New Horizons
IntroductionMany people warn of the possible harmful effects of using technology in the classroom. Will children lose their ability to relate to other human beings? Will they become dependent on technology to learn? Will they find inappropriate materials? The same was probably said with the invention of the printing press, radio, and television. All of these can be used inappropriately, but all of them have given humanity unbounded access to information which can be turned into knowledge. Appropriately used-- interactively and with guidance-- they have become tools for the development of higher order thinking skills.
Inappropriately used in the classroom, technology can be used to perpetuate old models of teaching and learning. Students can be "plugged into computers" to ...

In the News: Computers, art keep us busy during summer
By Sarah Tindall / Special to the Caller-TimesSunday, June 13, 2010
CORPUS CHRISTI —
Summer is in full swing! The frantic pace of the school year has ground
to a halt and the season of bathing suits and evenings spent out in the
front yard is officially upon us.
Breathe it in — no homework! Remember when you finished school and
you thought “Yes! No more homework for me, ever!” And then you realized
just about the time your first kid hit first or second grade that you
had years of homework that you’d have to help with.
This is a great time for your kids to learn a new skill, while their
little minds are not being crammed full ...

Don't talk to strangers on the computer, either
By Sarah Tindall, Corpus Christi Caller Times
CORPUS CHRISTI —
Stranger Danger: our kids know the drill about don't talk to strangers.

to your family every minute of every day, and we as parents are
learning that we must be just as vigilant about Stranger Danger on the
computer as we ever were at the park ...
